Another challenge is the unclear legal framework, especially in relation to data protection and ownership, and also the data transmission infrastructure. While the legislature needs to set cornerstones for Europe-wide data protection and for the handling of big data, people in business and science need to make responsible use of this new resource. Businesses and organisations that see this challenge as an opportunity and that succeed in developing intelligent solutions can gain a significant strategic lead over their competitors. An essential requirement here is not only that businesses use data responsibly – maximum transparency for the customer is equally important in order to establish faith in the new technologies and opportunities.
